What Is Hazelnut Milk?

Hazelnut milk is a rich and creamy plant-based milk with a lot of body. It has a nuttier taste compared to almond milk and is a pale chocolate brown colour.

How Is Hazelnut Milk Made?

Hazelnut milk is simply made by soaking and blending hazelnuts with water and then straining the liquid through a cheesecloth. Some companies add other ingredients to boost the shelf life and sweetness, but hazelnuts and water are the two key ingredients.

Fun Fact: Ancient Romans used torches made from hazelnuts during wedding ceremonies as they believed the nut provided happiness, strength and endurance.

Nutrition And Health

Hazelnut milk has around 4-9g of fat 3g of protein and between 70-100 calories per cup. Hazelnuts are an excellent source of vitamin E which is an antioxidant and helps to protect the body against free radicals.

Environmental Footprint

Hazelnut milk has environmental benefits over other plant-based milks. Like all nuts, hazelnuts grow on trees, which pull down carbon from the atmosphere, reducing GHGs. However, hazelnuts are kinder to bees than almonds because they are pollinated by the wind, as opposed to the mass-produced, commercial honey bees used in almond farming. Moreover, hazelnuts are grown in wetter conditions than almonds, meaning water is less of an issue when harvesting the nuts used for milc.
