What Is Almond Milk?

Almond milk is the liquid extracted from almonds. It’s an extremely versatile plant milk, a great addition to cereals, coffee and tea, smoothies, in baked goods and soups, sauces and salad dressings. You can also make delicious dairy-free ice cream with it!

How Is Almond Milk Made?

Almond milk at its core is simply made by blending almonds and water, then straining to remove any solids. Many brands you see on the shop floor fortify their almond milk with vitamins and minerals, such as Vitamin D, B2, B12 and calcium, as well as sugars, salt, stabilisers and emulsifiers.

Fun Fact: Almond Milk was invented in the Middle-East as a useful alternative to animal milk as it stayed fresh for longer.

Nutrition And Health

The Good

Almond milk has no cholesterol, saturated fat or lactose and has just 60 calories per glass. Almonds are naturally high in vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant and fights against inflammation. Many companies often fortify it with extra calcium and vitamins D and E during production, making almond milk a great source of these essential nutrients and minerals.

The Not So Good

With around just 1 gram of fibre per glass, it ranks low against its plant-based peers. If you’re looking to bolster your fibre intake, consider increasing your consumption of barley or oat milk!

Environmental Footprint

In a time of great concern for our climate and GHG emissions, almond milc can prove to be a great substitute for cow milk and other plant-based milcs, with the lowest emissions. In terms of land use, it also competes well against the plant-based milcs. However, almond trees are thirsty, using the most amount of water of any plant-based milc. They still use less water compared to cow milk though!
